I have submitted this open letter below to President Obama, at the White House, USA, and copied it to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Dear Mr President
As you know the British people have to make a momentous decision on June 23rd, the result of which will determine whether or not we retain a Parliamentary Democracy.
In view of our common roots, it has been a surprise to many that some US officials continue to urge their British allies to accept ever closer union with the European Union.
We will always listen to our friends but, in return, we ask that they be urged to hear what we have to say.
Our purpose in World War Two was to restore the sovereignty of nation states and many brave US servicemen fought alongside us - in the defence of liberty and to return the flame of freedom to Europe in 1944.
Indeed the US Constitution itself was designed to allow states to defend themselves against undemocratic leaders - whereas EU states have no such defences.
By contrast unelected EU officials, with expansionist ambitions, are bent on terminating the sovereignty of nations and they have a monopoly in proposing new laws.
There is also no mechanism to impeach an EU President, not least because they have legal immunity - which is hardly consistent with Magna Carta.
As Thos Jefferson observed, ‘When government fears the people there is democracy, but when people fear the government, there is tyranny.’
Clearly unelected EU officials have little reason to fear the people.
Unsurprisingly many British people don’t like that and prefer to retain the Parliamentary Democracy that our forefathers fought for.
Sadly we can only do that by leaving the EU.
That is because EU officials have but one goal, ie political union and we have little ability to divert it from that.
Not only is the financial cost of our EU membership high but our capacity to act independently Is being eroded - diminishing our value as an ally.
Of course we don’t expect to regain the powers of old but, if we can escape from this undemocratic sinking superstate, then we can again play a more positive role in the world.
It goes without saying that we will be far more use as a friend and ally of the United States, as a strong and independent nation.
So we would respectfully request that, if you can’t support us, then at least you might stand aside while we fight for our liberty.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
