Bye bye to The Rising Universe, once an impressive kinetic sculpture by world renowned artist Angela Conner.
Bold and visible from the four points of the compass, an enigmatic work of public art, an incredibly photogenic image that acted as a magnet to visitors and attracted business to Horsham. Never mind the fact thousands of people simply enjoyed it!
Poorly maintained, badly managed, left to deteriorate by those who didn’t like it or couldn’t see the point of being bothered.
I am sad to think that the Shelley Fountain’s creator has been too easily cast aside. Horsham’s image will be poorer for the fountain’s loss, more empty, plain and boring.
With other works of public art under threat in Horsham continued pressure needs to be applied to short sighted policy makers so that the town does not lose all credibility as an educated and enlightened home for art and culture.
Business succeeds best in places where art and innovation complement the uniqueness, character and quality of the surroundings. Art is usually a superb tool for marketing and promotion.
I could not attend Full Council on Wednesday April 27 because I was preparing for my mother’s funeral.
It is a relief that I was spared from this heavily weighted debate.
It is awful really, I have no faith that the hierarchy at HDC is willing to listen to all opinions when it comes to assessing the best interests of Horsham town.
