In his letter (WSG 7 March) Mr Colin Stepney is quite right regarding the reasons for building the Arundel relief road.
However. Arundel was persuaded to agree to the far from satisfactory temporary solution (with many misgivings) as assurances had been given by ‘the powers that be’ that because of the temporary nature of the road and the few years it would be needed, at no time would it be designated a trunk road.
I believe there was even some discussion at the time as to whether the road should remain afterwards as a route to the Station or returned to agriculture.
