Letter: Support for Billingshurst Lions work

I AM WRITING to thank all the residents of Billingshurst and the surrounding villages for the support they have given to the Billingshurst and District Lions Club throughout 2011.

As usual, for the two weeks before Christmas, the Lions arranged for Santa Claus to visit the children of Billingshurst and the villages. He visited, Slinfold, Loxwood, Wisborough Green, Rudgwick and Barns Green, as well as Billingshurst.

Donations in excess of £3,000 were gratefully received. We continue to have our very successful, inexpensive, bookshop in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst, which we would encourage everyone to visit. So in total we have raised £40,000-plus in 2011.

This has allowed us to spend a similar amount of money, mainly within the local community, on such schemes as a special wheelchair for a disabled child, decorating the Women’s Hall, the Scouts and Guides hut appeal, new play areas at Rudgwick and William Penn schools, entertainment for seniors and much more.

As well, donations have been made to international disasters like the New Zealand earthquake, Japanese tsunami and the famine in East Africa.

Finally our charity golf day, in September, allowed us to purchase computer equipment for children at Ingfield Manor School.

Our activities also include many social events, and if you wish to find out more about the Lions don’t hesitate to contact Alan Ridout on 01403 871370.

We look forward to continuing to serve our community in 2012.
