LETTER: Shared gladness for New Year

When we say, ‘Happy New Year!’ are we making a wish or invoking a blessing?

Actually, I don’t think our words will make any tangible difference at all, but they are an expression of good will towards another person.

So, what’s the key to having a happy 2016? Ironically, happiness tends to be elusive – the more you strive to make personal happiness your goal, the harder it is to achieve.

Instead, happiness tends to sneak up on you unawares when you are sharing something good with, or doing something kind for, other people: it’s frequently a by-product of selflessness.

Sometimes we can be happy by ourselves, but that happiness is greatly enhanced if we know that someone else loves us.

Why should this be? Maybe God wired us this way because we are made in his image, and when love is shared, Father, Son and Holy Spirit together see their image reflected in our relationships; that gladdens God’s heart and God shares that gladness with us… Happy New Year!
