The Waitrose / John Lewis development – the unfinished business
I was irritated to see the letter from John O’Brien, WSCC, in last week’s County Times, which appeared to suggest that ‘Mother knows best’ and the rest of us don’t know what we’re talking about.
Whether Mr O’Brien likes it or not, the new crossing on Albion Way, Horsham, is an accident waiting to happen.
Numerous concerns about this crossing were raised before and during the planning application for the new Waitrose / John Lewis edge of town stores and they were ignored by WSCC, the highways authority. It was obvious that it was going to be difficult to create an effective and safe single phase crossing at this point on Albion Way.
The end result was always predictable, so I thought. However, the reality is far worse and from a user’s point of view it can only be classed as a disaster.
I tried the crossing again on Friday, only to find that people, including my wife and I, are still getting stuck in the middle despite the detectors, which apparently make this impossible.
I’m sure that Mr O’Brien has already done this but perhaps he could return to Horsham and show all of us the correct way to use this new crossing safely.
