LETTER: Never intended to be a footpath

I read your article on the application of Mr Pilbeam of Coney Croft to have the so- called ‘footpath’ between the garages at the end of Coney Croft in Horsham re-opened.

This was never intended to be a ‘footpath’. Indeed when the houses were built there was fence across this area as can be seen from the remains of the fence posts. On the Deeds of certain numbers this area is marked as fenced off.

The reason for the present fence being erected was, as stated by Mr Haydon, at the suggestion of the police following a spate of burglaries and thefts from the garages to the sum of several thousands of pounds, not to mention anti-social behaviour and cars being tampered with.

Since the fence has been in place all this has ceased as has the amount of dog excrement in the area. In addition to the inhabitants of the houses mentioned above there are other residents of the street who are sleeping more peacefully knowing the gap in the hedge is blocked off.

Mr Pilbeam, who is the instigator of this application, has not been bothered by these problems since he lives half way down the street from the problem area. It is interesting to note that the only people he could get to pose for the photo was other dog walkers.

It would do the dogs and their owners good to walk the extra few yards using the official footpath. I also note he mentions a short-cut to the shops – which shops, there are none in the area.

The residents of these houses are in stressful jobs and can do without the extra stress being caused.
