LETTER: Cost outweighs any benefits

Following recent letters on the cost of our EU membership, it is interesting that economist Roger Bootle reports in his book '˜The Trouble with the Europe', that in 2004 the EU itself estimated business regulation costs at around £500 billion pa.

In another book, the ‘Great European Rip-Off’ by David Craig, the author estimates the total cost to Britain of the EU, to be £118 billion a year. Surely that far outweighs any benefit obtainable from being in the Customs Union, particularly since our exports to the Single Market (as a percentage) have been in decline for many years.
