LETTER: Above and beyond the call of duty

As a local councillor, I spend a lot of my time writing letters criticising various public bodies. So it is nice to praise them occasionally.

Last week the Horsham Guildford Road was blocked by a fallen tree. Local radio gave warnings gleefully noting that tree surgeons were on their way. They weren’t.

However, at the actual scene there was one policeman directing traffic, but more important, a sweating officer in shirt sleeves, with a saw, actively clearing the road ahead.

So well done guys, Katy Bourne please tell West Sussex Police, they deserve the building society’s award for ‘above and beyond the call of duty’.

However, it does raise an interesting point. It seems police cars carry saws as part of their standard equipment. Now Tasers, batons, dogs, pepper sprays and even guns are one thing, but four foot bow saws are in a different league.

I will have to treat traffic cops with more respect in future.

PETER BURGESS

(Con) Horsham district councillor for Holbrook West, Chart Way, Horsham
