AS THE Tories call for the abolition of the Press Complaints Commission, most people would agree that self regulation has clearly failed.
Should not the Cabinet Office Minister, Horsham MP Francis Maude, consider using his influence to persuade the Government to reconsider its position on the Audit Commission?
Surely at a time when the governance of our country has once again been shown to be lacking, now is not the time to abolish an independent auditing body!
Self or self selected regulation of local government and public bodies is not the correct route down which society should travel.
Cost cutting exercises should not be at the expense of both local and national government conducting their affairs in a transparent and ethical manner, which is, and is seen to be beyond reproach.
Anything less than the retention of the Audit Commission, will suggest that David Cameron’s Tory-led Government in calling for the scrapping of the PPC is nothing less than bandwagon politicking.
