HORSHAM-based ICT company Damovo is championing apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week.
Over the last 18 months, the information communication and technology specialist has taken on 12 local apprentices as part of its two-year apprentice scheme.
And such has been the success of the scheme that the apprentices from the first year’s intake have already been placed in permanent roles within the company.
“We have seen great value bringing young local people into the business,” said Alex Williams, head of technical support at Damovo UK. “Many senior people at Damovo started out as apprentices themselves. As a result, when we decided to restart our apprentice scheme two years ago we already recognised the benefit of apprentices bringing enthusiasm and fresh ideas into the business and ultimately, the company loyalty an apprenticeship creates.
“Apprentices are now playing an important role in our thinking around succession planning, as when we look to fill vacancies we are initially seeking to promote people up internally and create opportunities at a junior level.”
For the last two years Damovo has advertised its apprentice scheme through the local media and Central Sussex College. Interested applicants are then invited to a one-day workshop, from which a team of observers selects those to be offered a two-year apprenticeship with Damovo.
The apprenticeship itself is the ICT Professional Framework 340, comprising study at Central Sussex College to achieve the Technical Certificate element, and workplace assessment by an external assessor for the NVQ.
For the first 6-9 months of the process the apprentices rotate roles within the business to learn different skills in each functional area, during which time Damovo is able establish where each apprentices’ skills will benefit the company the most.
One successful apprentice is Liam Rogers who said: “I am enjoying my time as a Damovo apprentice as it allows me to learn on the job rather than in a full-time classroom environment. The pressure of satisfying my customers and understanding business needs on a day-to-day basis means I am also learning more. I have made a lot of new friends as well!”
