Workshops and street entertainment for all

STREET entertainment will once again be a key part of the Arundel Festival buzz at this year's all-inclusive arts celebration (August 20–30).

Glenda Harkess, artistic co-ordinator for the festival, said: "I think it is the core of the festival.

"The festival for me is for the community by the community in celebration of what goes on in the community."

And that means many of the talents drawn on will be distinctly local.

Some performers are being brought in through national agencies, but Glenda makes the point that it's not just about the expensive acts with international reputations: "I think it is really important that the street entertainment should enhance all the local talent that we have got."

There will be a band playing every afternoon in the town square during the week during the festival, with the bulk of the street entertainment on offer over the two Arundel Festival weekends, including juggling and penny-farthing acrobats.

"And we have got a couple of students doing stuff. They are absolutely brilliant!"

Added to all this will be a range of workshops include lindy-hop, jive and drumming plus samba demonstrations - all part of the genuine festival atmosphere that Glenda is confident she can create, alongside such genuine community events as the marbles championship, the mullet-fishing and the road race, plus worship and walks.

The festival kicks off on Friday August 20 from 1pm to 4pm with TellTales by Theatre Akimbo, Jubilee Gardens, followed from 2pm to 4.30pm by a workshop for the festival's opening procession, again in Jubilee Gardens.

From 5pm to 5.30pm, the big attraction is the opening procession and the raising of the flag, in the High Street and Town Square; from 5.45pm to late is the opening barbecue and disco in Jubilee Gardens, plus 8.30pm to11pm, Slim Jim & The Wildcards, at The Victoria Institute. The opening Friday, from 7.30pm, also sees Cinema on the Lake – A Matter of Life And Death, at Swanbourne Lake.
