Michael Wood’s sixth-minute goal was enough to book Loxwood their spot in the quarter-finals of the Peter Bentley Cup as they edged past Eastbourne United on Tuesday night.

The Magpies set up a home last eight clash with Horsham with the 1-0 victory at The Oval as they showed another string to their bow.

Manager Mark Beard was delighted that his side were able to overcome a difficult surface in a match that he felt earlier in the season, they would have lost.

He said: “We did well. It was a different type of game and the players had to dig in.

“The pitch was not suited to the way we like to play but together the boys showed a different way of winning.

“At the start of the season it was a game we would have ended up losing, we showed a very different side - we dug in and fought for everything.”

The only goal of the game came early on as Josh Courtney played a quick one-two and whipped in a cross, which Cecil Jee laid off for Wood to fire into the bottom corner.

Further chances were spurned by Sam Beard, who could have had a hat-trick, Eddie French had a header saved, Ross Swaine was denied and Charlie Pitcher failed to tee-up Ryan Richefond.”

On Saturday, the Magpies host Hellenic League Premier Division side Highmoor Ibis in the first round of the FA Vase.

Beard said: “Saturday is a massive game with the prize money as well and we are up against a team we do not really know too much about.

“The lads won’t have another real chance of going to play at Wembley unless they go on to play for a higher club, so it’s a good opportunity.”

Loxwood: Smith, Holvey (Summerfield 65), Simpson, French, Courtney, Beard, Richefond, Cave (Scally 55), Swaine, Wood, Jee (Pitcher 70).
