A Crawley Borough Council spokesman added: “One of our recycling crews was in Bewbush this morning and suspected their load was smoking.”

They pulled over along Salvington Road and called West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, he added. The spokesman said: “Upon arrival they were instructed to eject some of the recycling on to the road so it could be put out. This has now all been cleared up and due to the swift actions of the crew there is no damage to the vehicle and everyone is safe.”
