One of Horsham’s busiest roads has been closed after heavy rain battered the town this afternoon (Friday October 10).
Police closed Guildford Road in both directions at around 2pm west of the junction with Blackbridge Lane due to flooding.
Firefighters from Red Watch in Crawley attended the scene along with police where water left many residents trapped in their homes.
Crew manager Justin Bomyer said: “We received the call at 1.48pm this afternoon. The water was at least 50 metres wide and just over a metre in depth
“Police had already cordoned off the area and we assessed the situation. We found the house most at risk of flooding and decided to make a hole in the wall of the driveway to stop the house getting flooded.”
Water from the flood has now cleared but the road is still currently closed due to an oil leak from a car that was stuck in the flooding.
Rebecca Struthers lives in one of houses affected by the flood.
She said: “I came home and it was fine until about 1pm. I would not have believed water could have rise that fast. This road does flood but I have never seen it flood the grass before.
“I have lived here for six years and I have never seen this happen.”
