Local businesses put on their bobble hats and got knitting for a fund raiser which took over much of the town centre today (February 7).
Age UK Horsham District, a charity which provides activities and services to help improve quality of life for elderly people, hosted its second annual Bobble Day.
Shoppers were entertained by ‘Winter warm up displays’, including zumba and Tensho Chi classes, held on the bandstand in the Carfax.
A pop up shop in Swan Walk was filled with local businesses selling their goods as well as their hand knitted bobble badges and bobble hats, to help raise money for the cause.
The day also linked in with Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign which raises awareness of the risks and issues that older people face during winter.
Lawrence Mallyon, organiser of the event and community fund raiser for Horsham District Age UK, said they hoped to raise more than £3,500 with the event.
He said: “All the money raised today will go straight back into services in the Horsham district.
“Last year was our first event and we raised £3,500.
“We have added the pop up shop this year so we should be able to make more this time around.
“The cost of running the charity’s main flag ship services last year was around £55,000 and that is entirely funded by donations so every bit of help is needed.”
The band stand was dressed in a huge bobble hat.
Eileen Sendall, member of knitter’s corner, based in Bartholomew Way, Horsham, helped to knit the bobbles used to create a bobble hat for the band stand.
She said: “We’ve been knitting bobbles since just after Christmas. We didn’t have much time to get it done so we were knitting as quickly as we could.
“It was brilliant we enjoyed doing it.”
Businesses which attended the event included Annie’s Closet, of Lambs Farm Close Roffey, and Pretty Things, in Park Place, Horsham.
Age UK Horsham District provides information and advice, home visits and assistance with hospital appointments.
It also runs the Livinia House day centre Dukes Square and the Suzanne Green Centre, in Hamilton Road, Horsham.
Local schools including Forest School also got involved in the community spirit by holding woolly jumper days .
