The suspect was witnessed travelling at high speeds through built-up parts of West Sussex yesterday afternoon (Thursday March 10).

Police said he caused chaos on the roads as he sped through red lights, drove on pathways and reached speeds of more than 100mph, before crashing in Churchill Square, in Brighton, ditching the bike.

He is believed to be in his early 30s, has a distinguishing mole on his right lower lip and may recently have had a haircut to remove distinctive wavy hair.

Police said he is thought to have been in the Western Road area, in Brighton, near the Waitrose store at around 6.45pm yesterday prior to being picked up in an unidentified vehicle.

Hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and other relevant places in the city are being visited as part of the investigation, officers added

Police are also following up further lines of enquiry in Hampshire.

Roads policing officer Sergeant Alan Spicer said: “We were unable to apprehend the man yesterday as it was too dangerous for patrols to pursue him at the speeds he was reaching without further risk to others.

“But he is now believed to be hiding up and we would welcome any information from people recognising him or with knowledge of his current whereabouts.”

Several road traffic officers, dog units and two police helicopters were called to apprehend the driver.

He was first spotted driving more than 100mph on the A24 southbound between Broadbridge Heath and Findon at around 2.37pm.

Police said he crashed in Offington Drive, Worthing, at the junction of the A27 at about 3.40pm before jumping back on his bike, ditching his helmet and making his way along the A27, via Durrington, to Shoreham.

He was then traced riding along Dyke Road Avenue, into Brighton city centre and down to Brighton Pier, before heading west to Portslade.

Police said he circled Brighton again before crashing for a second time at the barriers to the Churchill Square car park at about 4.54pm.

He managed to evade offices after entering the shopping centre in Churchill Avenue on foot, where he discarded a leather jacket, and exited out into the town centre.

Sussex Police has been carrying out an extensive search of the city today (Friday March 11) to try and locate the man.

Anyone with any information or who recognises him is asked to contact 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101.

Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).
