Police are appealing for information after a schoolgirl was left in a critical condition following a crash at a village bus stop.

Police said the 11-year-old and a van collided on the B2139 Storrington Road, in Thakeham, this morning (March 22).

Officers along with paramedics and members of the Air Ambulance attended at 7.45am.

The girl was flown to St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, London, with serious head injuries. No-one else was hurt.

Inspector Phil Duffy, from Sussex Police, said: “We’re keen to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened and I’d ask them to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to report it online at www.sussex.police.uk/contact-us/response-to-appeal/, by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phoning 101, quoting Operation Turquoise.

The road was closed to traffic between the Greenhurst Lane junction and The Street.

One resident raised concerns about the location of the stop stating it was an ‘accident waiting to happen’.

West Sussex County Council said it was investigating the incident.
