A man has been taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after a serious crash on the A23 at Bolney.

The crash is now causing severe traffic on the northbound carriageway between Bolney and Hurstpierpoint.

Total Travel South East has tweeted that the road could be closed for much of this evening.

The two-vehicle crash has blocked the stretch between Bolney Cross and Warninglid.

Three fire engines and a heavy rescue tender were sent to the scene at about 3.46pm.

Sussex Police said a Fiat Punto was overturned after a collision with a car transporter.

The driver of the Punto was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the road and diversions are in place.
