AN INTERNATIONAL social phenomenon landed in the town when over 20 women marked the launch of Horsham’s Red Hat Society.
Twenty two women from around Sussex met for lunch at Wagamama, on East Street, to mark the launch of the Horsham branch of the international social group, the Red Hat Society.
The Society was founded 11 years ago in California by Sue Ellen Cooper after she was inspired by Jenny Joseph’s poem, ‘Warning’,
There are now 41,000 groups worldwide, with over 100 branches in the UK, creating a global sisterhood of women over 50 who enjoy socialising.
The Horsham branch, called Sussex Sisters, is led by Jennifer Russell and assisted by Pauline Harrin.
Jennifer said: “We are inspired by Jenny Joseph’s poem, Warning,
“It starts, ‘When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn’t go’. We are all over 50 and that’s our dress code.”
Women under the age of 50 are welcome to join, provided they wear pink hats.
