Last Wednesday Collyer’s 1st XI football team won the Sussex League Cup 2-1 in a gripping final against BHASVIC (Brighton and Hove Sixth Form College).

This was a fantastic achievement, particularly given that the last time Collyer’s won the competition was way back in 1969! The victory capped a fine season for the side, who also won the British Colleges’ South Region League.

Collyer’s fanatical support, who had journeyed to Hanbury park in Haywards Heath for the final, were rewarded with a goal after just ten minutes. Stanley Rice clinically finishing winger Tom Frankland’s incisive cross after some early pressure. Five minutes later, the skilful Rice spectacularly volleyed home from close range, after impishly flicking the ball over trailing BHASVIC defenders.

As expected, an excellent BHASVIC side responded with a relentless second half onslaught, culminating in a goal ten minutes from time. This certainly set the nerves jangling, but Collyer’s gifted ‘keeper Ben Legg produced a string of breathtaking saves to see the side home.

Dan Watson, Collyer’s subject leader for BTEC sport and the team’s head coach said: “The lads were really motivated and geared up for the game. Even prior to kick-off I felt that their attitude in the changing room was that of a united winning team.”

“In the last few minutes of the game I was so nervous for the lads and it was a huge relief for me and our incredible supporters when the final whistle finally went. Collyer’s deserved this win.

“We were technically superb and the team responded professionally to a number of tactical changes we needed to make during the game. This side have only lost 2 games all season and this win is testament to the hard work they’ve put in on the training ground all year. The final was an emotional rollercoaster for me and our supporters and I’m thrilled that this thoroughly inspirational group of young men have brought the cup back to Collyer’s after 45 years of hurt!”

Collyer’s Principal Dr Jackie Johnston said: “Congratulations to all involved in this incredible achievement. This has been a superb fortnight of sporting success at Collyer’s. I can’t wait to see the silverware!”
