Steyning slipped to a 88-run defeat when they got their Division 3 campaign underway on Saturday.

Last year’s Division 4 winners struggled with the bat against Burgess Hill as they were all out for 101 after the hosts had won the toss and made 189-9

Steyning vice-captain Ben Shelford said: “It was a really disappointing opening to the season for us.

“At the halfway stage, we felt that we were in with a great chance having to chase just 190.

“The whole team felt that 220 was the par score on a decent wicket and quite a dry outfield.

“I can have no complaints about the way that we bowled. The problem for us was the batting though. I think a few of the batsmen went into the innings with a T20 mindset and wanted to knock the runs off quickly.

“We should not have done that and made sure that we built from the beginning and chased down the target.

“That was not the case, though, and we fell a long way short in the end.”

Hill were initially reduced to 9-2 and then 116-6, but after Dan Yates was dropped on six, his unbeaten 53 helped the visitors to their competitive total.

Left-arm spinner Isaacs was the star man with the ball with figures of 5-32 in 16 overs.

Hywel Jones then got his side off to a quick start in their reply as he hit 18 from 17 balls before he was dismissed with the score on 20.

Oliver Collins (11) and Shellford (19) were removed cheaply as Steyning fell to 65-3.

Gary Hunt tried his best to steady the innings but wickets continually fell around him as he was the last man out with 36 in the 38th over.

Steyning travel to Portslade, who were promoted with them from Division 4, on Saturday.
