Twenty-nine schools in West Sussex are celebrating the results of this year’s South and South East in Bloom competition.
Bloom judges visited nearly 100 schools in the South East during June. Keen young gardeners enjoyed the opportunity to take the experts around their grounds and show off their flowers, fruit, vegetables and wildlife areas.
The school gardening contest, which is known as Blooming Schools, is sponsored by Southern Water and is now in its eighth year.
Maidenbower Junior School in Crawley scooped a Gold Award and was judged the best in the county. A further eight schools won Gold and seven were presented with a Silver Gilt Award. Ten schools scooped Silver and finally three received Bronze (see full list of winners below).
Andy Shaddick, public affairs manager at Southern Water, said: “Blooming Schools has really grown over the years and a record number of schools entered this year. More schools are using the outdoors as an excellent classroom to learn about things such as their local environment and water conservation and I am always impressed by the youngsters’ enthusiasm to make their school gardens a brighter and more sustainable place to learn.”
A Gold Award is presented for an entry rated as outstanding, Silver Gilt is given to a very good entry, Silver is for a good entry, Bronze is for an average entry and a Certificate of Commendation is presented for a fair entry. Marks were awarded according to a number of criteria, including how efficient the entrants were with water and other natural resources.
