Pupils from Ashington and Rudgwick are two of the winners of this year’s name a gritter competition.

Every year West Sussex County Council, in partnership with its highways contractor Balfour Beatty, lets school children name three bright yellow gritting vehicles.

This year Samuel Milton, of Rudgwick Primary School, impressed judges with the name Ice Cracker, while Ethan Schmidt, of Ashington First School, came up with the second winning name of Sussex Snowflake.

The winning pupils also won a high street voucher each, along with a grit bin, grit salt to fill it and snow shovels for their schools.

The third winner, Grittinator, was created by students of Burgess Hill Alternative Provision College.
