Review of The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black, Theatre Royal Brighton, Monday April 19 - Saturday April 24.
AS A FAN of scary movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre I wasn't expecting to be particularly frightened during The Woman in Black - but I couldn't have been more wrong.
While the play started off with some wonderful comic acting from Robert Demeger (Arthur Kipps) and Peter Bramhill (The Actor), the plot quickly took an increasingly menacing and dark turn.
Arthur seeks out The Actor to help him tell a story he has written which recounts his work as a lawyer in an isolated town that guards a chilling secret.
The tension escalates during the play, to the point where you literally feel a tingle running down your spine when the ghostly apparition slithers on to the stage or Arthur decides to investigate strange noises in the night.
Lighting was used to great effect in the play, either to illuminate the ghostly and sinister Woman in Black or to create the shadowy island on which she lived.
Recorded sound was also employed to add to the atmosphere, with the tortured screams of a woman or the rocking of an apparently empty armchair unsettling the audience.
Watching The Woman in Black, which came direct from the West End in London, was like seeing a horror film live - absolutely terrifying!
