Horsham District Council is teaming up with Horsham Pages magazine and Horsham Markets to create a special ‘Big Nibble’ competition.
During the month of August, food lovers are asked to send in their most unique local produce based recipes with the chance to win an £80 voucher to spend at Carmela Restaurant in Horsham.
The competition is being run in the lead up to ‘The Big Nibble’ event, which takes place in Horsham on the weekend of September 1 and 2 in what organisers are describing as Horsham’s ‘biggest nibble ever’.
‘The Big Nibble – A Slice of Sussex’ event is a local food and drink spectacular, organised by Horsham District Council in conjunction with Horsham Markets, and is the launch event for the District wide Food and Drink Festival (which runs from September 1 to 30).
Send in recipes, which should include both an ingredients list and a method, to Horsham District Council - email email@example.com or post it to Nigel Fitzsimmons, Town Centres Officer, Horsham District Council, North Street, Horsham, RH12 1RL.
The closing date for entries is Friday August 24 at 5pm.
Above all, it needs to be unique and include locally sourced ingredients. Why not visit Horsham’s weekly Local Produce Market in the Carfax on either a Thursday or Saturday for inspiration?
Carmela owner Francesco Raciti is proud to source a great deal of his produce locally (meat from New Street Butchers for example) for many of the lovely dishes served within the restaurant.
Entries will be judged by the founder of Sussex Food & Drink Network, Hilary Knight, and Horsham Markets operator, Marion Carter.
The winner will be announced at the Big Nibble ‘Live Food Show’ on Saturday September 1 in Horsham town centre, with the winning recipe available for members of the public to take away.
Roger Paterson, Horsham District Council’s cabinet member for the local economy, said: “Here’s a chance for everyone to get involved in this year’s Horsham Food and Drink Festival by entering their very own favourite recipes for the Big Nibble recipe competition.
“What a terrific opportunity for local residents to explore the culinary potential of the District’s wonderful selection of fresh produce and local specialities.
“There’s no doubt that the Big Nibble is going to be tastier than ever this year!”
Highlights of the ‘Big Nibble’ weekend this year include a diverse local produce market in Horsham town centre on both Saturday and Sunday, extended from the weekly Carfax offer to include an even broader range of artisan food and drink producers.
Visitors will be able to pack their bags full of wonderful cheeses, eggs, breads, pastas, oils, ice cream, beers, honey, meats, amongst many other products.
There will also be hot food available to eat on site and a town centre ‘Nibble Trail’ with free taster portions from participating restaurants, pubs, cafés and market stalls.
A ‘Beer Trail’ will take place with samples of local ales from town centre pubs and bars, along with a ‘Live Food Show’ with eleven demonstrations from accomplished local chefs and market traders, plus 50 live music acts covering various genres on five stages across Horsham town as part of the Horsham Festival of Sound.
The competition has been organised by Horsham District Council working in partnership with Horsham Pages & Horsham Markets.
