A resident said a plan to demolish a Pulborough petrol station and expand a car showroom could be disruptive to the village.

Harwoods Group has proposed to demolish a petrol station and Land Rover showroom in London Road, Pulborough in order to extend its Bentley showroom and build a new Land Rover space.

A resident living close to the site, Susan Carter, said she is concerned about the noise and disruption the work could cause.

In a letter to Horsham District Council’s planning portal, Mrs Carter said: “I work from home every day so do not wish to have the noise as I work unsociable hours and need to rest during the day.

“Also if they are doing away with the petrol filling station that only leaves one garage in the village to get fuel, which is not open as long as Harwood’s petrol station,” said the London Road resident.

A spokesman for HNW Architects, which has designed the new site, told the County Times if the plan is approved it will maintain current jobs on the site and create several new jobs.

He said: “In order to ensure the future of the facilities we’ve got to tidy up the site and one of the consequences is the potential of losing the petrol station.”

In response to Mrs Carter’s claims that the work will be disruptive to residents, the spokesman said: “You cannot make an omelette without cracking an egg.

“It’s about job creation and job retention, and taking this facility into the 21st century.”

The cost of the new Land Rover showroom is estimated to cost around £2.5m and the Bentley showroom is expected to cost £1m.

“The Land Rover showroom was opened 25 years ago. This is a success story,” he added.

The plan is yet to be considered by the district council.
