The MP for Arundel and South Downs Nick Herbert has said he has stepped down as policing and criminal justice minister.

On his Twitter account shortly before 4pm today (Tuesday) Mr Herbert told his followers: “Decided to step down from Govt. Honoured to have worked with police & driven big reforms. Will focus on new ideas and protecting countryside.”

Mr Herbert has been in his role as Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice, working in both the Home Office and Ministry of Justice since the 2010 General Election.

Before that from December 2005 David Cameron appointed him as the Shadow Minister for Police Reform.

In July 2007 he was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice. In January 2009 he was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
