A Horsham primary school is set to double in size as part of plans to create nearly 500 primary school places in and around the town.
In response to current and future demands on primary school places, West Sussex County Council has announced Arunside Primary School will go from being a one form entry school with 210 places to a 420 place school in September 2013.
Also from this date, Heron Way Primary School, Horsham, will increase from 315 to 420 places and Wisborough Green Primary will go from being a 20 place admission (140 places) to 25 place admission school (175 places).
The cabinet member for education and schools Peter Griffiths (Con, Hurstpierpoint and Bolney) also announced this week Shelley Primary School in Broadbridge Heath will relocate to the new development underway south of the village in September 2017 and expand by 140 places to 420 pupils.
These decisions come after a consultation with parents, teachers, parish councils and other interested parties in May during which parents had mixed views, particularly at Heron Way Primary, where 82 parents responded.
Of those. 42 approved of the plans, 35 disagreed and five were undecided. Responses from other schools were in single figures.
The decision will come into effect on August 2 2012 unless councillors call for the issue to be revisited.
