PHOTOS: Overnight blaze at recycle centre

Eleven crews were called to Burgess Hill Household Waste Recycling Site, in Fairbridge Way, at 8.15pm on (Thursday August 4).

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze broke out in the north east corner of the 75m by 25m building in a pile of domestic waste.

Seven pumps from West Sussex along with one pump for East Sussex, an aerial ladder platform, a water tender carrier and a command unit were sent to the scene.

A spokesman for the fire service said 50 per cent of the building was damaged by the fire, while the rest was damaged by smoke and heat.

The fire was extinguished by 9.30pm but crews remained at the scene dampening down until 3.30am today, the spokesman added.

Fourteen breathing apparatus, three water jets and one water hydrant were used to put out the flames along with a positive pressure ventilation fan to remove the smoke

It is being treated as an accident.

The fire service said they believed the centre would be open today.
