The 17-year-old shaved a shot off the Ireland course’s year-old record having taken inspiration from his golfing hero Tiger Woods.

He met the former world number one a week beforehand at Sage Valley Invitational in America, where he no doubt acquired some words of wisdom.

Despite being hampered by a rib injury, Penge hit two eagles and four birdies in an eight-under-par effort to beat a third-round 65 by last year’s winner Gavin Moynihan.

The five handicapper from Golf at Goodwood finished two shots behind eventual winner Warrenpoint’s Colm Campbell in the second round, having carded an opening 18 of 74.

Penge followed his record-breaking second round with 69 and then a final round of 72 to leave him tied fourth at nine under.

Campbell went on to lift the Irish Amateur Open crown with an impressive -16, closely followed by world amateur number 10 Jack Hume a shot further back.

Germany’s Maximilian Boegel finished third at 12 under, while England’s Matthew Jordan was tied fourth with Penge.

The Horsham golfer is now hoping to get to number 80 in the men’s world amateur ranking.
