A team of four Year 7 Oakmeeds’ students (Jude Harcourt, Thomas Midmer, Tom Rousell and Ben Sturgis) won the ‘Top School’ trophy at the Burgess Hill Academy Winter Chess Championships for Mid Sussex held at Birchwood Grove School on Friday 2nd January.

After six rounds competing against six other teams their combined score of 14.5 points showed great skill and potential for the future of chess at Oakmeeds. As team member, Tom Rousell, said: “We are developing our confidence and want to win more in the future.”

Ben Sturgis also won the Under 12 Medal for his individual performance.

The boys attend Chess Club at Oakmeeds and hope to continue their success for the rest of Year 7 and beyond. Congratulations!

There was more good news for Oakmeeds chess on Sunday 4 January when Thomas Midmer came fifth in the Under-18 Sussex Junior tournament at Hastings with a very good score of 3.5/6. Year 7 student, Thomas Lawence, also did well with 3/6, coming 8th out of 16 players.
