The fears of a German invasion can be seen from this report from the County Times. Fay Gate has, of course now become Faygate.

“Rusper: Under the auspices of the Rifle Club a well attended meeting was held in the Village Hall on Saturday.

“The following steps were agreed upon: 1) To re-open the range at once, to admit members free, and to supply free ammunition

“2) To form a camp and use an outdoor range.

“3) To invite all able-bodied villagers to attend drills to be held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays in the Village Hall.

“4) To share with Fay Gate the duty of guarding Fay Gate Bridge and Railway Station.”
