World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

This rather mysterious notice in the County Times 100 years ago probably intrigued as many people then as it does today.

“Aeroplane messages. The War Office issued the following notification through the Press Bureau last week.

“The attention of the public is called to the possibility of messages being dropped from aeroplanes. The messages will be enclosed in a weighted canvas bag, fastened with two spring clips, attached to which are two streamers of blue, red and yellow cloth, each 4 and half foot long.

“Any person finding or seeing such a bag dropped from an aeroplane should at once open it, and take steps to forward the enclosed message to the person for whom it is intended.”
