World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

There was a real feeling during the war that security should be in place to safeguard any attack or covert German plots.

“The inaugural meeting of the Horsham detachment of the Civil Guard for West Sussex was held on Friday evening on the recreation ground at the police headquarters at Horsham.

“Colonel Brander explained that the Civil Guard as previously existing was to be put on a proper basis. He read the rules of the new body and after he had called for volunteers, about 96 per cent of those present expressed willingness to enrol and to undergo the necessary training.”
