World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

As this report reveals, any German in the UK was required to register themselves with the police.

“At the Horsham Town Hall on Monday before Mr F. A. White (in the chair) and Mr A.C. Oddie, Kate Margarrat Weisse and Anna Helen Mausurd were charged with that, being alien enemies of his Majesty the King they did unlawfully, between August 10 and 16 fail to comply with the provisions of the Aliens Restriction Order, 1914, by registering themselves in the Police District of West Sussex.

“Prisoners are young married women and appeared to quite realise the seriousness of their position.”
