Another notice in the County Times 100 years ago to squash malicious rumours that were circulating.

“A denial to silly rumours: At a recent meeting of the Horsham Brotherhood at the Weslysan Church on Sunday afternoon the Hon Secretary Mr Joseph Theobald, a member of the Urban Council, and president of the Chamber of Trade, took a public opportunity of denying a strong rumour that he is a German.

“Mr Theobald was born in Norfolk, his great grandfather held in high position in the military profession of this country and for something like three centuries he can trace back his British genealogy.”
