It could be questioned whether this was a double bluff to ensure the British public questioned any stories of defeat.

“On Tuesday night the Press Bureau issued the following: The public are warned that attempts are being made by the enemy to spread false reports as to disasters to ourselves and our Allies.

“A clumsy story of this kind to the effet that a distinguised Highland regiment had lost the full strength of a battalion, reached the hands of the Censor some days ago and was stopped, although no British newspaper was deceived.”
