World War I daily bulletin from the Horsham district

It was only a matter of time before news arrived of casualties, this one having a local connection.

“Of the two naval officers killed in the daring raid on German ships inn Heligoland waters on Friday, one is Lieutenant-Commander Nigel K. W. Barttelot, only brother of Sir Walter Barttelot, of Stopham, and son of Captain Sir Walter Barttelot and baronet.

“The deceased officer was commander of the ‘Liberty’ which, with the ‘Laurel’ was in the very thick of the hot engagement with the German cruisers and destroyers.”
