A HORSHAM sausage maker is celebrating a brace of awards as his business enters one of its busiest times of the year.

David Bell of Bangers Galore won two prizes at the Weald Packaging Sausage and Meat Pie Competition, which took place at the Southern Eastern Prime Stock Winter Fayre, at the South of England Showground recently. (Tuesday October 23, 2010)

His Lamb, Garlic and Rosemary sausages claimed first prize in the Lamb and Beef category, whilst his festive Pork with Plum and Mulled Wine sausages took a very respectable second in the highly competitive Speciality Sausage category.

David said: “It shows we’re keeping up the good work of making a quality sausage, and it demonstrates we are getting the balance right between the flavours we put in to the sausage, and the fresh meat that we get in daily to make our sausages.”

Bangers Galore is based in a small industrial unit off Blatchford Road, where David relocated his business from Surrey one year ago with a £40K investment.

In the run up to Christmas, David and his full-time assistant Ryan, along with their book-keeper Linda, will be producing around two tonnes of sausages a week - about 36,000 individual specimens, all formed by hand into perfect packs of six.

“Yes, I do dream about sausages,” David confirmed when the County Times visited to film him making his sausages.

Having worked as butcher since the age of 16, David, now aged 44 still has a love for sausages which he has harboured since visiting the butchers as a young child with his mother. He now makes a huge variety of sausages, including seasonal favourites like chipolatas wrapped in bacon, pork with cranberry, and various flavours of festive sausage meat.

Bangers Galore customers can pre-order and collect purchases directly, and a number of local pubs and a few shops, including Old Barn Nursery at Dial Post, and Budgens at Billingshurst, stock David’s sausages. However, he is currently looking for a retail outlet to stock Bangers Galore products in Horsham town centre.

The two times National Champion Sausage Maker of the Year is keen for the reputation of Bangers Galore to spread down from Surrey where it is well established, and across the Horsham district and the rest of Sussex. Bangers Galore has recently become a member of A Taste Of Sussex to assist its growth in the Sussex marketplace
