MUSIC: Crawley Folk Festival

CRAWLEY Folk Festival has confirmed a string of top acts for this year's event from Friday to Sunday June 26-28 at the Hawth.

A family friendly live music event with more than 30 bands playing music from acoustic and folk to roots, blues, country and more, it is spread over five stages and three days.

Event spokeswoman Lorraine Gould said that as well as food and workshops festival goers could look forward to music from BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, the bewitching Eliza Carthy Band, Steve Knightley of Show Of Hands and blues from Paul Jones and Dave Kelly.

Local folk band Touchstone will also be taking to the stage as will Zoox. Groanbox Boys will be getting audiences' feet stomping at the Americana Night in the marquee with their unique rhythms.

To start the weekend folk rockers Oysterband will be on the main stage and the studio will be hosting the ever-popular Blues Night with Chuck Farley supported by Steve Jones and Sonny Black.

Lorraine said: "The festival is one of firsts this year with a traditional ceilidh on Saturday afternoon and the premiere of the Crawley Celtic and Irish Society's Stage, which will play host to Irish and Celtic dancing and music throughout Sunday."

This year Crawley Folk Festival is also welcoming Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds. The band play famous punk songs (Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers) on folk instruments, but give them a traditional Celtic feel.

There is also the usual range of free workshops and foyer performances, a real ale tent, craft stalls - plus demonstrations in Morris and traditional folk dance.

Lorraine added: "You can purchase a ticket for a specific event, a Saturday day or day and evening ticket, a Sunday ticket or a weekend ticket.

If you really want to get into the festival mood, we also have fantastic on site camping facilities."

Tickets on 01293 553636 or buy online at www.hawth.co.uk. For a full festival line-up, see www.myspace.com/crawleyfolkfestival.
