STAFF in the maternity unit at East Surrey Hospital have been using knitted woollen breasts to teach mothers about breast feeding.

The breasts were knitted by members of the Women’s Institute and the unit has now won ‘Team of the Month’ for February.

This is part of an initiative which will help East Surrey Hospital gain baby friendly status, endorsed by Unicef.

The Baby Friendly Initiative is a worldwide programme of the World Health Organisation and UNICEF.

It works with the health-care system to ensure a high standard of care in relation to infant feeding for pregnant women and mothers and babies.

Support is provided for health-care facilities seeking to implement best practice and an assessment and accreditation.
