Billingshurst cyclist Martin Kerr is attempting a two-day cycle ride to raise awareness of the plight of the residents of Christchurch in New Zealand.
Some 18 months after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit the headlines, many families are living through a second chilly South Island winter in houses which have still to be assessed for repair or demolition and typically have no central heating.
Martin, who is a a cycle trainer, said “I have been to Christchurch a couple of times and really loved it there. The people have been through so much and shouldn’t be forgotten. With up to ten aftershocks in the area each day since February 2011 it would be enough to dent the spirit of the most committed Christchurch resident”.
His ride this weekend (Seotember 14 and 16) will take him from Billingshurst to Christchurch in Dorset, a journey of about 80 miles. Supporters can sponsor him at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Cycle4Christchurch
Money raised will be donated to the ongoing Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake appeal.
