A man has been jailed for eight years after a series of illegal weapons and ammunition were found at a home in Steyning, police have said today (Friday June 3).
Miles Forbes-Hamilton, 26, of Coombe Road, Steyning, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on April 29, having been convicted of six offences of possession of a prohibited firearm, 12 offences of possessing ammunition without a certificate, and two offences of possessing a firearm when prohibited, officers said.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “On 29 April at Lewes Crown Court, Miles Forbes-Hamilton, 26, of Coombe Road, Steyning, was sentenced to a total of eight years’ imprisonment, having been convicted on 1 April of six offences of possession a prohibited firearm, 12 offences of possessing ammunition without a certificate, and two offences of possessing a firearm when prohibited. All the items were forfeited.
“Forbes-Hamilton was arrested after an altercation with two boys in Church Street, Steyning, on November 21 last year, in which he sprayed one of them with CS spray, causing the victim temporary facial burning.
“Police searched Forbes-Hamilton’s home and found, in a safe and a cupboard, a large quantity of firearms and ammunition.
“They included; two loaded revolvers, a double-barrelled sawn off shotgun, a .410 sawn off shotgun, three de-activated handguns, bullets, bullet presses, shotgun cartridges and machetes.
“Enquiries established there was no evidence that Forbes-Hamilton had collected the items other than for his own interest, but had they fallen into other hands, by burglary or any other means, the consequences could have been serious.”
