Worthing gardens award nomination

THERE were howls of protest when Worthing Council started to redesign the floral garden in front of Marine Parade's prestigious Heene Terrace.

But what a difference 18 months makes!

The parks department persevered with its aim of creating a lower-maintenance and more sustainable planting scheme – and the team has won over its critics.

So much so, that the garden has earned an elite accolade.

Plant project

The re-shaped garden gained recognition from the horticultural press when it reached the top five in two categories of a highly-regarded national Amenity and Landscaping Awards programme, organised by Horticulture Week.

The awards ceremony was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London,

where the council was represented by cabinet member Clive Roberts.

The two categories were Best Parks and Gardens Project, and Best Use of Plants in the Landscape.

And in Mr Roberts' words, "the standard of all entries was incredibly high. Being in the final five was a terrific achievement".

The gardens were made over to reduce maintenance costs and water use.
