VIDEO: Christmas lights to shine bright for local hospice

Waiting for Video...

A spectacular Christmas display will be on show at a Southwater home on Saturday, December 8 to raise money for charity.

Raymond Harvey, of 20 Cedar Drive, has compiled a range of American and English lights over his house and front garden in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

He said: “St Catherine’s did a marvellous job a few years ago looking after my mother.

“They’re there for everybody who needs them and you can’t say too good a thing about them.

“They’re fantastic.”

The lights will be switched on this Saturday at 6pm until 10pm and will be on between those times every day until the end of December.

Mr Harvey, aged 58, previously did a display three years ago for the St Catherine’s Hospice, which raised around £200, and two years before that for the Southwater Medical Foundation.

He added: “I wanted to do it last year but events prevented me so I hope it’s a big nice lovely surprise for people who may have forgotten my display last time.”

The icicles and lights at the top of the Southwater home are 120 volt American lights and this year Mr Harvey has created his very own a home-made designed festive feature.

“The Americans do excellent lights but they’re expensive to buy and ship over so I thought I’d make my own.

“A very good friend donated a bike, stripped it down, sprayed it black and I decorated it with rope lights.

“I think I’ve done a reasonably good job and once I get the rope lights going around the wheels hopefully it will look like it is travelling along.”

St Catherine’s Hospice have supplied a banner and a donation barrel will sit at the top of the drive for donations.

“I know times are hard but they’re a fantastic cause and need all the help they can get.

“I want people to give as much as they can as they really are a deserving charity.”
