UPDATED: Fire at Ifield pub

FIREFIGHTERS rushed to an Ifield boozer on Wednesday after bonfire night celebrations went awry.

Three fire engines from Crawley attended the Mill House Pub, in Hyde Drive, Ifield, after a blaze broke out on the pub's roof.

Flames erupted last night just before 9pm (November 5) after a stray firework lodged itself above the Ifield watering hole.

A member of the public spotted the flickering on the roof and shinned up with a fire extinguisher and put out the blaze.

The pub owner, said:"It was all over and done with within about five minutes, it was out when firecrews arrive.

"Someone saw it flickering a bit and smoking so they went up on the roof with a fire extinguisher and put it out.

"There was no damage thank goodness, but obviously we moved a few tiles to make sure, just as a precautionary measure. I think that people were more interested in the firemen actually, the kids loved that!"

The engines arrived at the Hyde Drive pub at 9.08pm and used a single hose reel to finish the job.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the Mill House Pub in Ifield at 9pm after a fire on the roof.

"A firework had lodged itself on there and started the fire.

"Three appliances attended and firefighters used a single hose reel to put out the flames."
