The collision involved a Ford Fiesta travelling west and a Toyota Landcruiser travelling east.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Tragically a 44-year-old local man who was a passenger in the Fiesta died at the scene. The 25-year-old local man driving the Fiesta and a 27-year-old local man who was also a passenger in the same car were seriously injured and were airlifted to Kings College Hospital in South London, where both remain in a critical condition.

“The 44-year old local man driving the Landcruiser received a minor arm injury but did not require hospital treatment.”

He added: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any events leading up to it to contact the Road Policing Unit via 101 quoting Operation Pelham.”
