This is the scene of a crash in which a driver was left hanging upside-down in her seat after a car overturned on the B2139 in Storrington last night (Tuesday February 26).
Emergency services were scrambled to this scene near the Claye Lane junction at around 6.45pm.
Martin McKilligin, watch commander at Storrington fire station, said wearing a seatbelt had done the driver ‘a big favour’.
“On arrival we had a car that had obviously gone off the road, up the hedge row and managed to overturn, completely blocking the road,” he explained.
“She was completely upside-down. The vehicle did sustain substantial damage and had turned over at some speed, so wearing a seatbelt did her a big favour. Otherwise should would have been thrown around the vehicle.”
Crew got to work cutting off a door to reach the victim.
She was talking to the firefighters and appeared to not have suffered any serious injuries, said Martin.
It took around 30 minutes for the team to rescue the woman before she was put on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
The watch commander added that the road conditions on Tuesday evening had been ‘pretty greasy’ but was keen to publicise the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
Five minutes prior to this incident, the Storrington crew were called to assist the RSPCA with a cat rescue.
The feline had been stranded on the roof of an Ashington home for two days.
