UPDATE: Bus driver ‘collapsed’ before Horsham crash

Bus collision in Brighton Road

Bus collision in Brighton Road

The driver of a bus carrying around 20 people which crashed in Horsham last night (Monday September 17) is believed to have collapsed at the wheel.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene in Brighton Road at Monk’s Gate just before 6.30pm.

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance said: “One male patient in his 50s, believed to be the driver, was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

“It is suspected he collapsed at the wheel after a medical incident.”

The single decker bus left the road and collided with bushes, said Al Green, watch commander at Horsham fire station, who attended the incident.

He said: “Upon arrival all the passengers were out of the bus, but the driver was inside, and attended to before being taken to hospital.”

One passenger was also treated at the scene before being taken to Worthing Hospital with neck and shoulder pain.

Police closed the A281 in both directions at the Nuthurst Road junction as recovery work took place.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

PC Creal, of Sussex Police, said the force is appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting serial number 1471 17/09/12.
